At Hempland Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that every child, member of staff and family is treated with dignity, respect and fairness. We actively promote understanding of diversity and inclusion in line with the Equality Act 2010, which helps protect people from discrimination and ensures equality of opportunity for all.
Under the Equality Act, there are nine protected characteristics, which are aspects of identity that the law recognises as needing protection from unfair treatment. These are:
- Disability
- Gender reassignment
- Race
- Religion or belief
- Sex
- Sexual orientation
- Pregnancy and maternity
- Marriage and civil partnership
- Age (in specific contexts)
We teach about these protected characteristics in an age-appropriate and sensitive way through our curriculum, assemblies, Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE SCARF scheme) and daily interactions. Children learn the importance of respect, kindness and fairness towards everyone, regardless of their background or identity.
Protected characteristics are not taught in isolation; they are woven into the life and values of our school. Through discussions, stories, curriculum links and school events, pupils build understanding and appreciation of diversity and learn how to challenge stereotypes and discrimination when they see it.
Our aim is simple: to ensure that every child at Hempland grows up with the confidence to respect and value others, contribute positively to their community, and thrive in a diverse and ever-changing world.
