At Hempland we teach the British Values of Democracy, Rule of law, Tolerance, Individual Liberty and Mutual Respect
Democracy
Children learn about democracy through PSHE lessons, thinking and reflecting about how to be fair and give everyone a voice. School council, planet protectors and weekly kindness certificates are voted for using a democratic process.
Each year children learn about British Parliament week with special assemblies and local council members are regularly invited to come and speak about their roles.
Children’s voices are heard through pupil voice surveys, feedback to staff, contributions to the school newsletter and discussions with school council and planet protector members.
Rule of Law
Hempland school values, respect, opportunity, ambition and respect are promoted and displayed throughout school with reward certificates presented in assemblies to those children who consistently display these values. Children may also earn team points and stickers!
School values underpin academic development and can be seen threaded through our personal development curriculum.
Children learn more about Rule of Law through subjects including PSHE and computing. Key Stage assemblies also teach about the British Values.
Tolerance
The Hempland RE curriculum ensures that all children have a good understanding of a range of religious beliefs and customs. To enhance this, every year group has a visit to a place of worship or invites a religious visitor into school.
In addition, the programme of assemblies provides an opportunity to discuss and learn more about tolerance. We help children to recognise that everyone is entitled to their opinion and have a voice in school.
Through our PSHE curriculum children are taught about differences, similarities and how to challenge stereotypes. We have a strong anti-bullying culture and as part of anti-bullying week, school council created an anti-bullying pledge which has been signed by all children.
Individual Liberty
Our personal development curriculum ensures that all children have the opportunity to develop their self confidence and follow their talents and dreams! Our wide range of extra – curricular clubs are extremely well attended and provide additional opportunities for pupils to pursue their personal interests.
Our culture of respectful behaviour ensures that children feel safe and can develop the confidence to participate in discussions, where they can express their thoughts freely.
Mutual Respect
One of our key school values is respect and this runs through the whole of our curriculum and school life. Children learn about showing respect both in school and in the wider community through our personal development curriculum.
PSHE lessons also allow children to have deeper conversations about being respectful to other people regardless of their culture and background.
During assemblies, respect is promoted and discussed through learning about other people, cultures and world events.
